G-Set English Centre in Hong Kong installs SMART Board interactive whiteboards at every location

Learner-centred technology improves student learning and engagement

Calgary, AB --- December 9, 2004 --- SMART Technologies Inc. announces the installation of nine SMART Boardâ„¢ 580 interactive whiteboards at the G-Set English Centre in Hong Kong by SMART distributor i-Control Ltd. Three out of four classrooms at each of the three G-Set English Centre locations now use SMART Board interactive whiteboards to teach English to students ranging from kindergarten level to business executives. Teachers at G-Set use SMART Board interactive whiteboards to deliver lessons and share digital content with their students. Students are encouraged to come to the front of the class and use the SMART Board interactive whiteboard, boosting participation in lessons. Teachers and students simply touch the screen with their finger or a pen from the SMART Pen Tray to access and write over digital lessons, computer files and websites.

Prior to the installation of SMART Board interactive whiteboards, G-Set delivered digital curriculum with computers and multiple wireless keyboards and mice. That system imposed limitations on collaborative learning because the computers supported only four input devices, and student attention was focused on the computers rather than the teachers. With SMART Board interactive whiteboards, the centre has found a learning tool that enables teachers to create engaging learning environments in a whole-class instructional setting.

"The SMART Board interactive whiteboards help us incorporate good classroom management, dynamics and methodology," says Daniel R. Dodd, director of studies at G-Set. "This type of learner-centred interface with easy-to-use interactive technology makes language labs obsolete. Students can freely contribute using ICT in the classroom without being tied to a computer. Teachers can develop learning 'scaffolds' using SMART Board software to support the curriculum and make use of the technology"

"SMART Board interactive whiteboards empower educators to use technology in new ways that improve student achievement," says Nancy Knowlton, SMART's president and co-CEO. "The benefits our products bring to the G-Set English Centre classrooms are being enjoyed by thousands of students in Hong Kong and more than 150,000 classrooms around the world."
